BALKAN ETHNO FEST SOFIA
BALKAN TRADITIONS. A NEW STAGE. A NEW AUDIENCE.
MANY TRADITIONS.ONE BALKAN CELEBRATION.
Balkan Ethno Fest is an international cultural project by Creative Resilience Foundation, inspired by the living brass tradition and festival culture of Guča, Serbia.
That is where the idea begins.
But Balkan Ethno Fest develops it into a wider Balkan format that brings musicians, brass bands, folk ensembles, dancers and contemporary ethno artists from Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia, Romania and other countries of the region onto one stage.
Alongside the music come traditional crafts, workshops, regional cuisine, producers and cultural spaces of the partner countries.
This is not just a concert. It is a celebration of living Balkan cultural heritage.
TRADITION MUST LIVE IN ORDER TO BE PRESERVED.
Balkan culture has never been static.
Melodies, rhythms, instruments and dances pass through generations, change, meet other influences and find new forms.
Balkan Ethno Fest does not put tradition behind glass.
It returns it to where it has always belonged:
on the stage, among the people, in the dance, in the competition and in the celebration.
WHY “ETHNO”
Ethno does not mean going back.
It means contemporary culture with a clearly recognisable root.
Today Balkan rhythms live in:
rock · ska · jazz · world music · electronic music · brass · contemporary fusion formations
Balkan Ethno Fest builds a bridge between authentic tradition and the contemporary music scene.
THE ROOT REMAINS. THE FORMAT EVOLVES.

INSPIRED BY GUČA. CREATED FOR SOFIA. OPEN TO THE BALKANS.
The idea for Balkan Ethno Fest was born from our personal experience as visitors to the brass music festival in Guča.
The energy of the brass bands. The playing battles. The audience. The streets. The competitive spirit. The way a tradition becomes a huge living cultural event.
That inspired us to ask one question:
Can Sofia create its own international Balkan festival that preserves this spirit, but opens it to more cultures, more musical forms and a new audience?
The answer is Balkan Ethno Fest.
THREE DAYS. THREE FACES OF THE BALKANS.
FRIDAY
THE CONTEMPORARY BALKAN SCENE
Balkan rock, ska, world music, ethno and contemporary fusion. The first evening brings traditional rhythms together with the contemporary music scene and opens the festival to the young urban audience. The roots meet the present.
SATURDAY
FOLKLORE WITHOUT BORDERS
Folk ensembles, traditional musicians, dance groups and traditional performers from different parts of the Balkans. We do not seek uniformity. On the contrary. Each culture arrives with its own music, costume, dance and character. On one stage, the differences begin to speak to one another. Different countries. Kindred rhythms. A shared Balkan space.
SUNDAY
BALKAN BRASS NIGHT AND THE GREAT PLAYING BATTLE
The finale belongs to the brass bands. Guest formations take the stage with their own programmes, and the evening closes with a great Balkan playing battle. Different styles. Different schools. Different energy. One stage. The competitive element creates the spectacle, but it also has a deeper role — it motivates musicians to develop the tradition, raise their level and create new interpretations. The battle is not just a show. It develops the tradition.
FROM COMPETITION TO A SHARED BALKAN SOUND
Balkan Ethno Fest begins with difference and ends with encounter.
Brass bands, traditional instruments, singers, dancers and contemporary musicians can create shared performances that do not erase individual traditions, but show how they can speak to one another.
BATTLE → ENCOUNTER → CELEBRATION

FOLKLORE IS NOT A BACKDROP. IT IS A VOICE.
Folk music and dance are a core part of Balkan Ethno Fest.
Ensembles, bagpipe formations, traditional orchestras, singers and dancers present the different faces of Balkan tradition.
But the audience does not remain a mere observer.
People, musicians and dancers meet in shared dances and festival moments that turn heritage from a stage performance into a shared experience.

HERITAGE IS PRESERVED WHEN IT KEEPS BEING MADE.
Balkan Ethno Fest includes a space for traditional crafts and demonstration workshops.
Clay. Ceramics. Woodcarving. Leatherwork. Textiles. Traditional instruments. Other living craft practices from the region.
Visitors do not simply view finished objects.
They see the process.
They talk with the masters.
They touch the materials.
They take part.
The craft zone is cultural content, not just a trading bazaar.

CULTURE HAS A TASTE.
Balkan cuisine is a natural part of the festival experience.
Selected producers, farmers and culinary operators can present traditional products and flavours from Bulgaria and the other participating countries.
Bread. Cheeses. Meat and vegetable specialities. Spreads. Sweets. Regional drinks. Family recipes and local products.
Food is not separated from culture.
It is one of the ways culture is shared.

BALKAN CULTURE HAS MANY FACES.
Balkan Ethno Fest is not the festival of a single country and does not place one tradition above another.
It creates a space in which different cultures arrive with their own identity.
Serbia can present its brass tradition and festival culture.
Romania — its musical, dance, regional and gastronomic traditions.
North Macedonia — its artists, ensembles, festivals and cultural destinations.
Bulgaria is the host and presents its own rich musical, dance and craft heritage.
NOT ONE CULTURE BEFORE ANOTHER.CULTURES THAT MEET.
CULTURAL PARTNERS
Within Balkan Ethno Fest, partner countries can have their own cultural and information spaces.
There visitors can discover:
01festivals
02cultural events
03musical traditions
04regions
05crafts
06cuisine
07travel routes
08ideas for the next cultural journey
In this way the festival creates a link between one experience in Sofia and the real discovery of Balkan culture beyond Bulgaria.
LIVING HERITAGE, NOT A MUSEUM DISPLAY.
The music is performed. The bands play their battles. People dance. Crafts are made before the audience. Food is shared. Masters pass on skills. Artists meet a new audience. Different cultures speak to one another. In this way tradition remains connected to its origin, but continues to live in the present.
CULTURE MUST BE ACCESSIBLE.
Balkan Ethno Fest is conceived as a free-access festival. This allows music, dance, crafts and cultural heritage to reach a broad audience regardless of age, social status or previous contact with these cultural forms. The festival does not wait for people to seek out tradition. It places it before them in a way that is alive, contemporary and engaging.
FROM SOFIA TO THE BALKANS.
Balkan Ethno Fest begins in Sofia.
But the vision is to grow into a long-term international cultural platform for exchange between Bulgaria and the other Balkan countries.
Each following edition can bring together new artists, new organisations, new festivals and a new audience.
Not just an annual event.
A place where the Balkans meet through culture.
Balkan Ethno Fest is an independent cultural project by Creative Resilience Foundation, inspired by Balkan brass traditions and the cultural heritage associated with Guča, Serbia.
